Scope of Debate

Imagine that you are in a room with others in a social setting. The room is not particularly loud, being filled with the sounds of interested conversation, laughter, and social banter. You navigate to one corner of the room where there is a group gathered, and a topic comes up that begins to draw divergent opinions (probably one of those topics best avoided at dinner parties). One person makes a point that you basically agree with, but that you think lacks proper evidence or context. Another makes a second point that seems vague and overly generalized, but meets with general approval, nonetheless. A third person speaks up and commits what you take to be an example of straw man logical fallacy. This scenario continues for a few more minutes. The topic itself has the approval of the participants; it is agreed upon to be important and worthy of attention. However, your analysis of the multiple approaches taken by the participants in this impromptu debate is that they leave much to be desired.

You decide that what is needed in this situation are “rules of debate.” You have an opinion yourself, but in the interest of fair play, you decide to withhold it and to instead engage with your acquaintances as a moderator. Your goal is to help the participants identify the real question at hand (so far, it is a bit fuzzy), to identify what evidence and logic are needed for a reasonable discussion, and to point out logical fallacies and poorly argued points. In simple, you want to help your new friends move away from their superficial conversation to a deeper and more meaningful discussion.

Instructions: For this paper, you will select a topic that might be the topic of conversation in the scenario outlined above. Your goal is not to argue your personal opinion, but instead to establish the proper parameters of debate. Your argument (i.e., thesis) will be to identify what the key question(s) is, and to outline the best strategy for a productive conversation.

Matters to Address:

  • Provide a summary of the topic (that is, the conversation)
  • Identify the legitimate areas of contention (there will be at least two “sides”), and legitimate objections to the differing points of view
  • Identify the evidence needed for a productive conversation
  • Identify the necessary knowledge or reasoning skills needed for a productive conversation
  • Identify possible misleading and/or irrelevant points that might nevertheless be attempted by some participants; identify possible misleading or irrelevant evidence
  • Identify possible argument fallacies, areas of vagueness, “red herrings,” etc.

Requirements:

  • Approximately 3-4 pages, double spaced, 12pt font, and formatted according to the APA, MLA, or Chicago style manuals
  • Use of at least two published sources (no websites): Incorporate sources to help you understand the diverse perspectives and potential areas for debate, controversy, and problematic issues.
