EMPLOYEES’ EXERCISE 1 In the absence of a well-focused question, it can be challenging and time-consuming to identify and define a specific problem and come up with the necessary solution. One of the evidence-based practice to the definition of a problem is the use of a PICOC framework, which is an acronym for population, intervention, outcome, and context. In this case, PICOC will be applied to the issue of lack of exercise among employees in organizations to help come up with the necessary resources to improve the rate of employees participating in the exercise. The paper hypothesized that the introduction of paid employee exercise programs would lead to maximum benefits to the employees and the organization, hence improving both the professional and social lives. The Problem The main problem is the lack of exercise among employees. Majority of employees do not engage in the proposed physical exercises, which leads to several cases of health-related pain and lower productivity. Based on the PICOC model, the people of interest are employees, who do not engage in enough physical exercise at the workplace. Guthold, Stevens, Riley, and Bull (2018) researched on the level of physical activity globally, whereby they found that the level of those who are physically inactive in high-income countries such as the US and the UK had risen to thirty-seven percent in 2016, from thirty-one percent in 2001. However, the level of physical inactivity had remained stable at around sixteen percent in low-income countries. Kohll (2019) outlined that eighty percent of adults do not meet the required guidelines of physical activities. Therefore, the main problem is the lack of exercise at the workplace, which leads to a decreased level of productivity and increased health complaints from employees. Flowchart The following flowchart was used to analyze the problem Recommendations Introduce Paid Exercise Organizations need to understand the benefits of exercise to their employees, hence introduce the idea of paid exercise. According to Kohll (2019), the majority of workers do not engage in exercise due to the notion that they are too busy with tight schedules. However, majority of firms have adopted the concept of introducing paid exercise programs, with the aim of not only improving the physical appearance of its employees but also improving the mental and work productivity (Therrien, 2019). For instance, at TotalWelness, its employees are encouraged to exercise before, during, and after working hours to increase their productivity (Kohll, 2019). The manager at TotalWelness suggests that the main reason for the program was to enhance the comprehensiveness of workplace, which allows workers to not only achieve the necessary physical fitness but also improve their moods and memory, which makes a workplace to be enjoyable for the employees. The significant cost of the introduction is that the firm will have to incur financial expenses since it will compensate the workers for times that they spent exercising. However, the act of exercise at work leads to more benefits than the costs. First, there will be reduced cases of physical pain, which affects mostly the office and computer workers, among others. Employees also benefit from improved cardiorespiratory fitness. Local Gym Negotiations Some organizations do not have a place to exercise. The tight schedules of their workers may make the majority of the employees not to engage in such physical exercises, hence using the lack of a gym as an excuse to not engage in one. Therefore, one of the approaches would be to enter into agreements with local gyms to offer corporate discounts to an organization’s employees. Local gyms need customers, and such an arrangement are likely to be accepted since it will increase the gym’s brand equity in the market. As such, the arrangement will encourage employees to engage in exercise since such services will be affordable to them. The approach will not cost the organization any amount. It will instead increase its connection with the local gym, at the same time, increase the productivity of the workers. Since the firm will become a crucial partner to the gym, the gym instructors, as well as its management, will be encouraged to recommend its consumers to purchase the products of the organization, hence increased customer base. In the same way, the workers will be encouraged to exercise since some of them will fall under peer influence and join the others in the gym. The overall result is the increased employee physical and health shape, which further improves their mental shape. Offer Reduced-cost Pedometers Pedometers help to measure the steps a person makes. In this case, the organization should set up a simple team competition to encourage increased daily steps. The first step should be to offer reduced- cost in some cases, free pedometers to employees to encourage them to be more careful with their daily physical exercises. The firm should then divide its employees into teams and let them compete weekly for the increased daily steps. This approach will make them more careful about their physical exercises in the aim to win the set price. It should act as the initial step towards creating awareness of the employees on their physical activity. Conclusion The main problem identified was the lack of exercise among workers in organizations. Several statistics indicate that the level of physical exercise among adults has significantly declined over the past decade. The financial pressure has led to people working under tight schedules, which makes them more unlikely to engage in exercise. Consequently, three recommendations have been identified to help overcome the lack of exercise among employees. The statistics indicate that increased physical exercise at the workplace leads to increased health of employees, further improving their productivity in the firm.
