Colleagues post: There are certain individuals more likely to develop osteoporosis than others and that is patients being treated with glucocorticoids for things such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. The American College of Rheumatology has published guidelines suggesting a baseline DEXA scan be performed on those with longer term use of steroids and the use of calcium and vitamin D be used in primary prevention for osteoporosis (Onkka, et al., 2018).

The main primary prevention measure women do not utilize is osteoporosis screenings such as DEXA and education. Osteoporosis quality improvement strategies are primarily focused on individuals who have recently had a fracture and therefore it becomes secondary prevention Leslie & Crandall, 2019).

The US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) performed a study, and it did not have adequate information provided for primary prevention of fractures in a community dwelling from postmenopausal women. The study showed women were more likely to develop kidney stones when taking vitamin D and calcium supplements than those taking the placebo (Grossman, et al., 2018). The USPSTF did recommend exercise to prevent falls, and screening for women 65 years or older and in younger women with increased risk factors (Grossman, et al., 2018).
