Metaphors
Metaphors are powerful tools of
expression, and they are utilized in many areas, especially literature, music,
and of course, the divine Holy Bible. According to Webster’s dictionary, a
metaphor is a “word or phrase for one thing that is used to refer to
another thing to show or suggest that they are
similar.”(Merriam-Webster.com, 2019).
God knew beforehand that his people
would have difficulty interpreting the bible, so he inspired the authors
through his spirit to use metaphors when writing the bible. A very symbolic
scripture is, “But now, O Lord, You are our Father, We are the clay, and
You are the potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand” (Isaiah 64:8,
NIV). This metaphor describes God as a potter who molds clay. God’s followers
are the clay and are subject to his design and influence.? Jesus said to them,
“I am the bread of life; he who comes to me will not hunger, and he who
believes in me will never thirst” (John 6:35, NIV).
Metaphors are the fundamental principles
of comprehending organizations. Due to the complexity of an organization’s
structure and operations, metaphor provides a vivid understanding of the
construct. (Morgan, 1997, p. 25). Furthermore,
since Morgan formulated the fundamentals for understanding an organizational
structure, other researchers can assess or develop different metaphors to
broaden understanding of an organization (Örtenbladi, 2016, p. 875). By knowing
and understanding the metaphors, people can work more effectively together, and
leaders can deal with challenges.
