(Mt) – Richland College PMI Code of Conduct Worldwide Responses

Discussion board question: 1. How would you define: honesty, integrity, loyalty, & service from the perspective of a Project Manager? How are these concepts implemented in the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct? 2. What are the key elements of the PMP Code of Professional Conduct? Do you feel they cover all the issues that may arise in practice? If not, what issues are missing from the Code? Explain your responses. I have to reply for this two person’s post. I need separate answer like, 1st person post reply…………….. 2nd person post reply…… Person 1 post: I think there is a very specific way to define honesty, integrity, loyalty, and service from the perspective of a Project Manager. The document “Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct,” put out by the Project Management Institute also summarizes these characteristics in a way that makes it easy to retain. Ethics should drive every decision that a project manager makes, and these decisions should be driven from a place if honesty, integrity, loyalty, and service. In my opinion, it is up to the Project Manager to set the tone and expectations on how the project should go. If they are setting the example of a moral and vigilant manager, other will follow suit. People will likely try to get away with what they can, and if there is no slack given in the ethics department, people will not push the boundaries there, which is the ideal scenario for any manager. These four ideals make up the backbone of the PMI Code of Ethics published for all interested parties to follow and adhere to if they want to be associated with PMI, or any of its certifications and teachings. Honesty in the context of a Project Manager means that a PM is going to be open and transparent with all happenings of the job, good or bad. PM’s are typically the source of truth, and those closest to the happenings of a project. It is up to them to report out their findings and the happenings of the project. These happenings can be good, or they can be bad, and it is important to be able to articulate both, no matter what the news is. I think this is an important place to start for this Code of Ethics. The document on the PMI site references the courage it takes to be honest in the face of bad news (Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct). This is an important consideration, as PM’s could be getting themselves or others into trouble. They must be honest in the face of this regardless of the outcome they might encounter. The document also points out that it is important to seek the truth, and this can be hard at times (Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct). It is a PM’s responsibility to look after the project and team but always be on the lookout. Integrity is important in the context of Project Management because without it, there is nothing to uphold the ethical standards that are set. It takes people with integrity to be open, honest, and unwavering in their commitment to their moral code. Project Managers cannot be swayed by those around them and cannot give into wrong doings or shortcuts that are against their moral standards. Loyalty is important for many reasons as well. The Code of Ethics document by PMI points out that conflicts of Interest are when loyalty issues come into play (Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct). They are important to consider before ever needed and understand how to navigate the situation. The document says that you have a duty of loyalty to the company that you work for, and in situations where opposing parties’ interests are against one another, one has a code to uphold to with their employer. Finally, service is a key foundation that a Project Managers code of ethics should be built on. Project Managers have a duty to serve many different parties, and it is their job to take the interests of all into consideration. Project Managers just manage a team of people that all have wants and needs of the project, for various reasons (i.e. daily work, home life, opportunity, career). The customer wants the best project possible, at the lowest price possible, while being on time. Management wants to make the most money as possible, keep the customer happy, and keep all of the employees happy. It is up to the PM to use servant leadership to try to accomplish the goals set out for them, and meet the needs of those counting on them. Person 2 post: The key elements of the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct are Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, and Honesty. The code uses these values as it’s foundation. These values apply not only to all Project Management Institute members but also non-members who hold a PMI certification, non-members who apply to commence a PMI certification, and non-members who serve PMI in a volunteer capacity. These four values were decided on by practitioners from the global project management community. Each section of the code includes both aspirational standards and mandatory standards. Aspirational standards even though, not easily measured, are not optional. Mandatory standards are firm requirements and in some cases limit or prohibit practitioner behavior. If a practitioner doesn’t follow these standards, they will be subject to disciplinary procedures before PMI’s Ethics Review Committee. (The Project Management Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, n.d., p.1-2) Responsibility refers to the person’s duty to take ownership of their decisions and actions that they choose to either do or choose not to do. The person then also must take ownership for any consequences that result from their decisions and actions. Furthermore, as practitioners, they need to make decisions and take actions based on the best interests of society, public safety, and the environment. They also must report unethical or illegal conduct to appropriate management. (The Project Management Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, n.d., p.2-3) Respect refers to the person’s duty to show high regard for not only themselves but to others along with resources under our control such as money, reputation, and safety of others. A practitioner practices respect by informing themselves about the norms and customs of others to avoid conflict before it starts. The person needs to listen to other points of view and seek to understand them along with always professionally conducting themselves even if the behavior is not returned. Practitioners also must negotiate in good faith, not act in an abusive manner towards others, and respect the property rights of others. (The Project Management Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, n.d., p.4) Fairness refers to the duty to act impartially and objectively. Practitioner’s conduct must be free from competing self-interest, prejudice, and favoritism. Fairness deals a lot with disclosure, transparency, and equality when conducting one’s self. Practitioners must not discriminate based on gender, race, age, religion, etc and do not make personnel decisions based on personal considerations such as bribery and favoritism. (The Project Management Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, n.d., p.4-5) Lastly, honesty refers to the person’s duty to not only understand the truth but also act truthfully in both communication and conduct. Practitioners must provide information promptly and act in good faith while making commitments and promises. They should not act to deceive others and not engage in dishonest behavior with the intention of personal gain or at the expense of others. (The Project Management Institute Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, n.d., p.6) After reviewing the code, I feel that the code is very expansive and broad and covers the main issues that may arise in common everyday practice. The code has been reexamined multiple times over the years to adapt to the changing business environment. The process that was used to create the code was very in-depth using focus groups, surveys, and extensive research which was then looked over by the global project management community for their feedback. These groups of people are the ones dealing with ethical issues daily and I feel that they have developed a strong code after reviewing situations they have directly dealt with on the job.
