Chapter 1: Identify Life Management Skills, Values, and Goals Today in our ever-changing world, life can be quite tough, but being able to identify your goals and priorities is a great first step to creating good life management skills. Studies show if you write down your goals, you are 90% more likely to meet them. Often times, college students tell me they feel so lost but knowing who you are and setting values and goals to move you in the right direction can bring a lot of clarity to life. The earlier you can set these goals, the better you can help move yourself in the direction of completing your goals. When coaching clients and I ask students to come up with their life mission, sometimes, I get a blank stare. As this can sound ominous, “A Life Mission.” But it is really not as hard as it sounds and we are going to take some baby steps to get you there. Step One: Values What are your values? My values are passions and beliefs that I live by. These are your core set of beliefs that guide you, and good chance you have those established. Take a moment to review your values, and if you had to pick the most important one, what would that be? Step Two: Evaluate Skills, Interest, and Values: What would you say has influenced your thinking and values? I would say for me it was my upbringing, culture, and experiences that play into all of this. I want you to reflect on what is it that you love to do? What skills do you have that you have learned from your experiences in life? Now, are there connections between what you love to do and your skills? These two areas play a big role in coming up with your “life mission”, and can any of these help you get to where you want to go in life. Step Three: Realistic Goals: So how do we move from just goal setting to making those goals a reality? That is usually the toughest part, setting those goals in motion. But all it takes is a first step. So what step needs to happen to move you in the direction of your goals? One of the best ways to learn if your goals and plans are realistic ones is to do some research. Think about your dream job or life that you want and research it. Maybe even go to work with someone and shadow them. Often, I have had students who told me this was their dream job, they got started, and it was not anything they thought it would be. When I mastered my time management, my world started to come all together, and I started hitting those goals that I had set for myself. I started with a calendar, and yes, I got rid of the paper calendar. It’s so easy to lose that, and I couldn’t always have my paper calendar on me at all times. So, I switched to an electronic calendar in the cloud. I use Google Calendar and love it. I can have multiple calendars overlapping in different colors and see all I need to do along with my husband’s calendar, my kids, and my work. It’s beautiful and has made my life so much easier. It’s my personal assistant as I can access it at any time check my calendar and let someone know if I am free and set reminders to alert me. I live and die by this calendar, and I trained family and friends to know that if it’s not on the calendar I won’t know to come, so make sure you send it to me. Trying to remember all the things I need to do as a CEO of three companies and a mom, wife, and professor just isn’t realistic. Once you have your calendar set up, you need to know what you can realistically do. I was a yes person for a long time, and I tried to say yes to everyone. It soon become very clear I wasn’t leaving time to sleep. So, I had to decide with what was a priority and not a priority. I couldn’t be in three places at once. So, when scheduling your life, be realistic, what can you really do realistically. Nothing bugs me more than people who commit to something but don’t show up, and if you make a habit of that, you become the person with the reputation for flaking. That is why balance is the key with your time management. This is where you have to accept the fact you can’t do everything, and that is ok, you are not failure; you are just being honest with what you can do. And a good way to know when you are not managing your time well is looking at your physical, emotional, and financial health. If you are struggling in some or all of these, there may be some issues going on and you need to look and see why you are struggling in these areas. First, write a list of your goals, put them in order of most important to least important. Next to each goal write what steps is needed to make this goal a reality. Now it’s time to make an action plan. I have put an example below, but you can get as creative as you want when creating this action plan. After you have finished your plan, attempt to define your life mission. Write it out at the bottom of your action plan. Here is an example of my life mission: “To empower and support and give back to my community.” Now that you have an action plan, goals, and your life mission established it’s finally time to establish your priorities. This is time to be very honest with yourself on what activities in your life are detouring you from accomplishing these life missions and what activities will move you in a direction to accomplish your life mission. Time is a very precious commodity in my world, and I work to use it well every day. Exercise 1.3 Time management Take time to create your virtual calendar. There are many calendars you can use for time management. I use Google Calendars. Take time to create the calendar and start using it today.
