Question
TMA introduction
The TMA case is about ways and attributes to build successful teams. It explores different attributes based on real experiment that differentiate successful teams from unsuccessful ones. It reflects as well on main features and their inter-relation and how they would affect a team for being successful or not.
The attached case “A Case Study of Team-based Problem Solving Processes: Comparison between Successful and Unsuccessful Teams” aims to compare the differences between successful and unsuccessful teams among their problem solving process. It concludes on interesting remarks with regard to attributes and features leading teams for being successful or not particularly the level of problem solving practices.
QUESTION
Teams need to be seen in the wider context of the organization. It is then easier for the manager to see what he or she needs to do to ensure that the team functions successfully and what needs to be controlled, monitored and/or influenced within and outside the team.
Based on your course material, identify what needs to be done to create successful team particularly at the level of problem solving skills. Explain the main factors that might lead teams for being unsuccessful teams and explain from this perspective how managers can ensure effective team working. Discuss the case in line with the explained theories and identify with evidence from the case what were the elements that led the authors to consider the teams as being successful or not. Your discussion should be done in a word limit of 2000 words.
Hint: in your essay, you need to consider the following:
- Your answer needs to be divided into two main frameworks:
- In the first framework, you are to explain in details the system approach to team working and attributes needed for successful teams.
- In the second framework, you are to explain main aspects leading to unsuccessful teams and explain how this can be managed by managers.
- Your discussion should be supported with a critical discussion of the case in line of both frameworks while providing evidence (i.e. examples and segments) from the case.
- You may refer to external resources to support your discussion.
- EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Referring only to course material is not enough. Referring only to the case is not enough. Answers are to include critical discussion based on relevant course material and the case.
- Refrain in your answer to discuss personal opinion or judgements about the issue. Personal opinion, if any, can be provided in the conclusion.
- Answers are to be provided in an essay format (introduction, body and conclusion). Refrain from referring to bullet points.
- You always have a margin of plus or – 10% with regard to word count.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS
- Cut-off date: Week 6 (exact date to be specified by deanship). If you feel that you are unable to meet the cut-off date of the TMA because of unusual circumstances, please contact your tutor as soon as possible to discuss a possible extension to the cut-off date. The exact cut-off date will be assigned in due date.
- TMA weight: 20% of total course grade (TO BE UPDATED BY THE DEANSHIP WITH REGARD TO SUMMER SEMESTER 2021)
- Course material:
- Chapter 8: Working in groups and teams. Students can refer to other course material if needed.
- Format: Write your answers in essay format. Failing to do so could result in grade deduction from presentation marks up to 5 marks. You may, however, use bullet points, diagrams, tables, or any graphs to support your arguments.
- Plagiarism: It is imperative that you write your answers using your own words. Plagiarism will be penalized depending on its severity and according to AOU plagiarism policy (Enclosed after these instructions you will find the Arab Open University Rules of Cheating and Plagiarism).
- Word count: Answers must be within +/-10% of the word count. Answer that fall below or above this range can be deducted up to 5 marks.
- Referencing: Use the Harvard referencing style for in-text referencing and make a Table of References at the end. Failing to do so could result grade deduction of up to 5 marks.
- Research: In addition, although text books assigned in the course may be used freely as references,you are required to use a minimum of 2 external sources. It is recommended that you use scholarly studies found in the E-library link at the LMS. Failing to do so could result in grade deduction of referencing marks up to 5 marks.
