Social Work England (SWE) CASE ANALYSIS – Original Paper

CASE ANALYSIS – PLACEMENT 2The purpose of this Case Analysis is to demonstrate your ability to undertake and critically analyse a substantial piece of work. This should be a piece of work undertaken during your final placement with an individual, family, carer or group. It must concern your practice in one or more of the following areas:undertaking a substantial assessment;formulating a support plan based on an evaluation of strengths and risks; ordelivering and evaluating an intervention. This assignment directly addresses the (end of last placement level) Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) and the C & F Knowledge and Skills Statement or Adult Knowledge and Skills Statement, depending on your placement setting. In the course of writing this assignment you need to ensure that you evidence all nine of the PCF domains and any three of the KSS. You should also make reference to the Social Work England (SWE) Professional Standards, as appropriate to your placement setting.REQUIREMENTSThe Case Analysis must relate to a substantial piece of direct face to face work you undertook with a service user, carer or group during the placement, and where you had primary responsibility for the piece of work you are analysing. Substantial is not defined by the number of occasions on which you have met the person/people but the quality or intensity of the encounters. You may not use a piece of work where others have been responsible for conducting the work or where you have only been an observer. If you are using a case where you have been a co-worker, you need to identify your own area of responsibility and focus on that for your analysis but explain any areas of crossover with your co-worker.You may use a piece of work in which you are not allowed to take full responsibility, for example, a Mental Capacity Assessment or an aspect of a safeguarding investigation, but you must explain the role of the qualified social worker and analyse your own role within the case. You must ensure that you include evidence of your ability to work in accordance with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and to uphold social work values of respecting and valuing diversity and promoting social justice and inclusion. The word requirement is 4000-5000 words. You must include reference throughout to the level of PCF ‘By the end of qualifying programmes’ and three of the KSS relevant to your placement setting, showing how this links to your own practice. Examples of how you might include the PCF and KSS in your work are:The Framework for Assessment of Children In Need (FACIN) involves gathering information and analysing this based upon three domains; Children’s development needs, parental capacity and the impact that the wider family and environment have upon the family (Department of Health, 2000) (D5, C & F KSS 3, 5, 6 ).S disclosed that she had forced her mother to complete a home detox whilst her step-father was in Italy. This involved K going “cold turkey” meaning that she was unable to carry out her role as a mother leaving S to take on this responsibility. It was evident that S resented this due to the negative language she used when describing her mother and I could see the impact that this had upon S (D5, D6, D7, Adult KSS 2, 5). I wrote to her GP and with her agreement requested a referral to a local counselling service for young people (D2, D6, D7, D8). This provided S with support for her to understand her experiences and recognise the impact they had upon her emotional wellbeing.
You must include a statement on how you met the expectations of the Social Work England (SWE) Professional Standards during your direct practice. You must adhere to usual academic guidelines for referencing and confidentiality. Please read the student handbook for full details. The assignment will automatically fail at 30% if you breach confidentiality. Confidentiality applies to you, service users, carers and other professionals. This means that no identifying names of either yourself or people with whom you are working should appear at any point in the assignment. When an assignment contains information that relates to individual service users or carers, their informed consent should be given for their information to be used for this purpose. A statement should be included indicating that informed consent has been obtained.
THE TASKYou must cover each of the three sections in bold headings in order and all of the elements noted under each heading must be included. However, these elements should be interwoven in your analysis, not presented in separate ‘chunks’. You should decide on a structure that you feel best enables you to communicate your analysis clearly and succinctly. You must focus on being critical and analytical rather than descriptive. You may use sub-headings if you wish.
IntroductionAn introduction where you lay out the purpose of the assignment and details of the areas that you will cover.A brief description of the context and setting that you were pl in, including details of the work of the agency.A brief description of the service user/s, carers, groups or communities who were central to this piece of work, including age, gender, ethnicity, any relevant relationships etc.The reasons that you were involved in the work and the objectives of your intervention.
Critical analysis, incorporating:The legal, policy and organisational framework within which the practice took place. The evidence that informed your understanding, decisions and actions. This should include reference to specific research studies as well as your understanding of theory. The impact of strategies to address social inequality and promote social justice and inclusion. The management of value conflicts and dilemmas.A consideration of how you have met the expectations of professional conduct, performance and ethics in your particular placement setting. The outcomes of your practice and the methods used to evaluate your practice. These must consider the experiences and/or perspectives of the service users, carers, groups or communities with whom you worked.
Conclusion
Your critical reflections on your main learning points from this piece of work and the areas of learning and development that you will carry forward into your first social work post.
