When I write papers, I start with my topic statement (or research question for a research paper). Then I create a paragraph-by-paragraph scratch outline. This is not a formal outline with Roman numerals and letters that you probably learned in middle school. A scratch outline is a rough list of paragraph topics. If I have to write a 15 page paper minus two pages (title page and reference page), then I should have roughly 33 paragraphs (2.5 paragraphs per page x 13 pages). I decide which sections need more elaboration and weight them more with more paragraphs. After the scratch outline, I then fill in each section with specific paragraph topics that should logically flow (logical by importance, time ordering, mounting evidence, etc…) For example, in the deterrence theory section, I have 8 paragraphs to write, so I might break it down this way:
Deterrence Theory
Deterrence theory comes from the Classical School of Criminology. Deterrence theory suggests that humans are rational actors who weigh punishments and rewards of a given behavior.
In order to deter, punishments must be swift, severe, and certain; certainty is the most important. There are two kinds of deterrence: specific and general. Research shows that rational behaviors can deterred by punishment but emotional ones cannot. Recent research in economics and criminology recasts human decision making as ‘bounded rationality’. Informal social controls are often more effective than formal social control Transition into next section: deterrence applied to cyberbullying is difficult because bullying, especially by adults, is not a specific criminal offense. For each paragraph, I would flesh out the subtopic statement with evidence or details. As I write, I might find that some paragraphs are no longer needed (I folded two paragraphs into one) or I might need to add a paragraph or two if a particular subtopic needs further evaluation. My final paper often looks much different from my scratch outline, but the basic structure is still there. I will probably have too many paragraphs at the end, so I will cut out some of the sentences or paragraphs that do not contribute to my topic statement.
Why do I plan my writing this way? First, the paragraph is the unit of composition, not the page. Unfortunately, we have all been taught to write X number of pages for an assignment so often we just fill in the white-space of our word processor until we reach that final number. But if you think in terms of paragraphs and assign topics to each one, then you can plan out your argument and check for logical consistency. Once you have your outline, it is much easier to break the writing process into manageable chunks. For example, I could pick just three to four paragraphs to write about each day and be done in about ten days. I would rather focus on three paragraphs each day than worry about writing X more pages to complete the assignment. In addition, your writing should be more cohesive because you have structure to follow. Without a plan, student writing (and, frankly, a lot of academic writing) is a stream of consciousness.
Of course you do not have to do it this way; it is just a suggestion. Regardless of your writing workflow, be sure to revise and copy edit your publish before you turn it in. Have someone else (maybe a classmate) read your publish and offer corrections. A significant other will do in a pinch, but they typically do not give critical feedback. My wife’s comments after reading my dissertation publish chapters was usually, “That’s very nice, honey.” Nice to hear, but not much help.
