Your Research Context Paper must focus on three development issues to explore more in-depth as you read and prepare for the book review assignment. This research will provide you with the context to understand why environment, infrastructure, poverty and development are development issues to overcome in Haiti, for example. Or why migration, gender, human rights and development for Hope are so important to create change. Finally, for Home, why are housing, colonialism and development so important in this context? These are questions to assist you in choosing the book to review and better understand the development context in which the book is situated.
Select a minimum of three resources that were published within the last ten years and cover the issue from a variety of angles. Challenge yourself to better understand the development context of your chosen book. You must include two peer-reviewed sources. Below is a list of ideas for source material to get you started.
Useful Peer Reviewed Journals (all available electronically)
Development and Change
World Development
Development Policy Review
Journal of Development Studies
Journal of International Development
Journal of Environment and Development
Canadian Journal of Development Studies
Third World Quarterly
Food Policy
Economic Development and Cultural Change
Ethnography
Politics and Society
World Politics
International Affairs
Foreign Affairs
In addition to peer-reviewed research, your sources can include mainstream media reports and reports from relevant UN Agencies and NGOs, such as:
Global Affairs Canada
International Development Research Centre, Ottawa (IDRC)
UK Department for International Development
The World Resources Institute, Washington DC
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
The World Bank
Additional resources can come from:
Mainstream media outlets, such as CBC, BBC, The Globe and Mail, The Guardian, and Al Jazeera.
Alternative news sources, such as Human Rights Watch, The Conversation, African Arguments, and Global Voices.
Blogs and podcasts, such as UN Dispatch, From Poverty to Power, Development Unplugged, and GDP – The Global Development Primer.
Using these resources as a starting point, write your own context paper about the issue. Compose this assignment as if it was written for publication, such as a report for the UN or a context paper for an NGO. You may use first-person pronouns (e.g., I, me); however, you should not submit an opinion piece, but a well-researched paper based on factual evidence. Do not include images for which you do not own the copyright. There is no need to include any photos or graphics in your submission.
Come up with a headline that is both informative and memorable. Start your Research Context Paper with a brief overview of three ideas you wish to review. One of the key challenges of this assignment is its brevity. The Research Context Paper should be no more than 800-1,000 words long (excluding the reference list). Edit your work carefully to present the necessary information clearly and concisely. Based on your research about the topic, present your own critical analysis by addressing the following set of questions:
What historical factors have led to the emergence of the development needs?
What people/groups face challenges or problems as a result of this development context, and why?
Who has more power to influence what is happening, and who has less? Why?
How might this issue be resolved? What barriers exist to a potential resolution? How might they be overcome, and what are the implications that arise for the future? (If you do not see a resolution, why not?)
Does your individual identity (e.g. cultural background, gender, nationality, education level) influence your perspective on this issue? How might your perspective on the issue differ from that of people with different identities?
There is no need to pose these questions explicitly in your paper, but make sure that you have thought about each of them. A reader who knows little about your chosen context should be able to gain more than a superficial understanding of the historical factors, relevant actors, power relations, and/or (inter)cultural context that gave rise to it.
Your Research Context Paper should include the following elements.
An informative title (specifically book name and research directions).
A brief overview to give the reader context.
Your own critical analysis and perspective on the development context, and address the questions listed above.
Correct in-text citations and a reference list containing all of the sources you used to gather information for your paper. Use the Chicago Author-Date referencing style. For details about the Chicago format, visit Chicago Author-Date System on the University of Guelph’s library website.
