10-1 Discussion: Typical vs. Atypical Development
Throughout this course, we have explored different aspects of development, and research has presented a variety of influences in the form of biological, social, emotional, and cognitive domains. At the end of nearly every chapter reading, a holistic position began to emerge that acknowledges the contribution by each domain. In our final discussion, reflect on whether a holistic approach is just as effective for accounting for atypical development as it is for typical development. Utilize examples from the course to support your position, or consider using an issue of atypical development to provide context (e.g., autism or antisocial behavior).

Context of Development
The field of developmental psychology attempts to examine the multilayered and multifaceted dynamics of individual development across the life span. The focus on child and adolescent development provides the greatest opportunity for prevention of and intervention for atypical development, and it provides direction for the promotion of optimum health.
This course provided a journey from one end of the continuum of the nature versus nurture conflict of biology and genetics to the opposite end of social and environmental influences. While this might lead one to believe that this conflict remains a central focus for the field, the truth is that the field has evolved toward a more holistic perspective. This perspective acknowledges that the interaction of biology and genetics with social, emotional, and environmental influences provides the unique developmental results that are observable in each individual. While the argument may continue regarding the degree to which each of these influences development, the interrelated nature must be respected beyond the traditional core conflicts.
A great deal of assessment in the field of developmental psychology is based on the establishment of norms. Norms are the range of outcomes or expressions that are the most common in each of the developmental domains. Atypical development is then assessed by the degree to which one deviates from those established norms. It is important to respect that cultural and societal shifts take place, and this affects what we consider norms. It is also important to respect that there are an infinite number of possibilities for development. These factors should limit the value of norms when they are used by mental health professionals or developmental psychologists. The true value in identifying typical versus atypical development is that it provides opportunity for prevention and intervention.
In closing, this course has been developed to push students to move beyond comprehension of theoretical concepts and diagnostic criteria and to examine the application of these concepts. It is hoped that each student will leave with a deeper appreciation for the value and impact of the field of developmental psychology.
