using the link provided in Canvas and are due by 07/14/2024 at 11:59 pm. Students that do not

Assignment.
Purpose of this Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to conduct an internal analysis of Kohl’s Inc. as well as an
analysis of its external environment.
Rationale for this Assignment
Communication is essential to be an effective contributor in the business world, and written
analyses are key aspects of business communication. This assignment provides you the
opportunity to collaborate with your colleagues to further develop your analytical skills as well
as your communication skills.
Content To Include
Respond to the prompts for each of the following paragraphs in regards to your group’s assigned
firm:
• 1st paragraph: Review the firm’s website, 10-k, or SEC Form 20-F (if it is a non-US firm)
and, in your own words, briefly summarize what you’ve ascertained to be the firm’s
purpose. Be sure to cite any sources used appropriately.
• 2nd paragraph: How well is the firm performing from a financial perspective? Choose 4
key financial metrics reported in the 10-k that help you diagnose the firm’s financial
performance. Explain why you chose each metric and interpret the firm’s performance
according to each metric. (Hint: Quality responses will identify financial metrics that are
relevant to analyzing financial performance and discuss the firm’s performance relative
to a competitor’s performance or relative to its prior performance for each metric.) Be
sure to cite any sources used appropriately.
• 3rd paragraph: What are the key strengths of the firm? Does the firm have any resources
that provide a sustained competitive advantage? Specifically identify the firm’s key
strengths, justify why you consider each resource identified to be a key strength, assess
whether the resource provides the firm with a sustained competitive advantage, and
justify why you do/do not think it provides the firm with a sustained competitive
advantage. You should use references to support your analysis, and be sure to cite the
sources used appropriately.

• 4th paragraph: What are the key weaknesses of the firm? Specifically identify the key
weaknesses and justify why you consider each resource identified to be a key weakness.
You should use references to support your analysis, and be sure to cite the sources used
appropriately.
• 5th paragraph: Assess each of the five forces for the firm’s primary industry (i.e., Apparel
Industry Report) as a strong, moderate, or weak competitive force and justify your
assessment. This assessment should be based on the information provided in the Apparel
Retail in the United States Marketline Report that your instructor made available to you
within Canvas. Be sure to cite this report appropriately.
• 6th paragraph: Based on your analysis, identify the one or two most important critical
issues your firm is facing and justify why you think so.
Sources To Use
A quick online search will reveal that many case memos, case analyses (e.g., SWOT analyses),
and assignments are readily available online. However, you may not consult case memos, case
analyses, or assignments that are posted online or available elsewhere (e.g., from previous
semesters) for any of the written assignments unless they were provided by the professor. In
other words, DO NOT use a source that has “SWOT Analysis” as its title or as a subtitle in
the article.
If it is determined that your group utilizes one or more of these types of sources without the
professor’s permission, the assignment must be revised and resubmitted within one week
after the instructor notifies the group. Upon resubmission within one week, there will be a
penalty of a 20% deduction on the graded resubmission for all group members deemed
responsible for utilizing the unpermitted source. If not resubmitted within one week, the
assignment grade will be a 0 for all group members deemed responsible for utilizing the
unpermitted source.
The reason for this is twofold:
• 1) You should learn to analyze cases and companies independently. Even casually
reviewing this material may cloud your judgment. This is the “anchoring effect.”
Likewise, utilizing ideas (even if they are not direct quotes) from others without proper
attribution is considered plagiarism.
• 2) The quality of the memos and assignments posted online is notoriously poor. As a
general rule, “A” students from good universities do not post their work online. The
analyses you find online are unlikely to meet my standards.
• Thus, the sources you should utilize for this assignment include:
o The firm’s website
o The firm’s annual report filed with the SEC (10-k for U.S. firms and 20-F for
non-U.S. firms) as well as competing firms’ annual reports
o The provided Marketline Report
o News or research articles from reputable sources, if needed. If you are unsure
whether a source is reputable, please reach out to the professor.

Artificial Intelligence, Citations & Referencing
• Using Artificial Intelligence to write any content for this assignment is impermissible and
is considered an Academic Honesty Violation. See the syllabus for the consequences of
violating the Academic Honesty Code.
• If you do not cite a source when you utilize content or an idea from that source is to
plagiarize. See the syllabus for the consequences of plagiarizing. Further guidance
regarding in-text citations using APA style formatting can be found at:
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_g
uide/in_text_citations_the_basics.html
• APA style formatting is required for all citations and references.
• You need to include in-text citations for the source(s) you use each time you utilize
content or an idea from a source. For example, you should include (Kohl’s Inc., 2023)
at the end of each sentence that you utilize content or an idea from the firm’s annual
report.
• While a quality analysis rarely uses quotes, if you do choose to use a direct quote from a
source, be sure to cite it appropriately using APA style formatting.
• Each source utilized should be included in a References page utilizing APA style
formatting. This References page should follow the same formatting as the rest of the
document and use “References” as the title of the page. Further guidance regarding a
Reference list can be found at:
https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_g
uide/reference_list_basic_rules.html
• Since this is a group assignment, all group members are responsible for the content
submitted and for ensuring that all content in the assignment is cited appropriately.
Formatting
This assignment has a strict 2-page limit for content (not including References and Appendix
page). Further formatting instructions include:
o Single-spaced
o Times New Roman Font
o Size 12 Font
o 1 Inch Margins
o Include an Appendix with each group members’ name and a brief explanation of each
group members’ contribution to the assignment (i.e., which paragraphs they wrote,
etc.).
Grading
• I will use the rubric listed below in grading this assignment.
• Prior to the assignment deadline, you will be asked to rate your group members
confidentially, and if two or more group members indicate that a student in their group
had a below average contribution to the assignment, that student’s grade will be lowered
accordingly. If it is clear that a group member did not participate in the preparation of the
assignment, the student will be assigned a 0.
• In addition, if a student does not complete the peer evaluation by the assigned deadline,
that student will receive a 10% deduction for the assignment.
