You recognize that patient care is being compromised because of the inadequate samples delivered to the laboratory for analysis and initiate a process improvement team.
Initial Post:
Determine other inter-professional members within the healthcare organization that should be included in the process improvement discussions surrounding the importance of specimen collection and transportation to avoid hemolysis. Using the Shewhart Cycle of Plan -Do-Study-Act as a process management tool provide one hypothesis of why specimens may be hemolyzed (part of the Plan or P of the process), and one solution (the Do or D of the process) that can be applied or implemented when working toward a reduction of hemolysis in specimens received into the lab.
