Discussion 4.2 Assessment and Positive Psychology

            Throughout this program and my professional career, I have learned about different assessments that can be used for individuals and organizations. One assessment I would use to measure an individual’s strengths is a resilience assessment. Resilience is defined as “the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands” (Resilience, APA.org, 2024). Having resilience is a strength, so the resilience assessment could aid in assessing the client’s resilience, especially if the client disclosed significant life events that have impacted their daily life. Once measured, tools can be provided to build upon the strength of resilience the client already has, so the client can adapt and adjust in difficult situations. One of the resilience assessments would probably be the Resilience scale. Research suggests that resilience has been “positively associated with self-esteem, active coping skills, health promotion, psychological well-being, healthy lifestyle behaviors, self-care, goal achievement, religiosity, spiritual well-being, and optimism (Resilience Center, 2024). Resilience assessments can be used for individuals and families.
            Another assessment I would use to measure strengths is the VIA Character Strengths Assessment. This survey helps individuals learn their strengths and aids in determining what the top strengths are of individuals. This assessment would be useful for clients to learn their top strengths and how those strengths can be used to build the life they desire. This assessment could also boost the client’s self-esteem by bringing awareness to strengths clients may not be aware of that they have, “Everyone possesses all 24 character strengths in different degrees, so each person has a truly unique character strengths profile” (viacharavter.org, 2024).
            An assessment I would use for an organization would be the SWOT analysis. I participated in the SWOT assessment with a former employer during a strategic planning phase. The SWOT assessment measures a company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (MindTools.com, 2024). The SWOT analysis provides insight into an organization’s status and helps guide the organization into developing strategies that are best for the organization based on results from the analysis.
            The Resilience Scale integrates principles from positive psychology, as it measures strengths instead of limitations. Learning a client’s level of resilience and improving their level of resilience can increase well-being, life satisfaction, and overall health which are principles within positive psychology. The VIA Character Strengths assessment focuses solely on positive attributes and strengths. This assessment reveals a person’s strengths and does not focus on a person’s deficiencies or weaknesses, which is also a principle of positive psychology. Positive psychology aims to focus on what is going well and not the negative. Lastly, the SWOT assessment partially integrates principles of positive psychology. Part of the SWOT assessment measures an organization’s strengths and aims to build upon the organization’s strengths which correlates with positive psychology. The SWOT analysis also analyzes weaknesses and threats which emphasize what is not going well in an organization, this does not align with positive psychology principles as this portion of the assessment pinpoints issues and challenges within an organization.

           I feel the heart of positive psychology is the strength-based approaches and the understanding of these strengths and enhancing them helps promote a better wellbeing. There are many strength-based assessment tools you can use for leadership development and management, and for individuals as well. There are several studies that show the personal and professional benefits of applying our strengths in our jobs and daily lives. When we work on the positive parts of our personalities, it shows we can have a more of a positive impact on others, it improves our relationships even in workplaces, and enhances your happiness. One assessment I would use to measure an individual’s strengths would be the Strength Regulation Worksheet, I like it because it is a useful tool to help that client to identify times when they may have overlooked their strengths or used them in a wrong way. One goal of this self-regulation worksheet is to help them develop a better understanding of their own emotional, cognitive or behavioral patterns. It will help them manage their emotions and find better patterns for behavior in a healthier way. I use this tool with kids to help them identify their triggers for negative emotions or behaviors. I help them develop coping skills and setting goals to shift towards positive behaviors. It’s been effective so far. Self-control and self management have been a struggle for the kids I work with. I also like the Personal SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats) is used to help companies assess internal and external factors that can contribute to their advantages or disadvantages. I took one of these in undergrad and it helped me to see what areas were strong or needed improvement. Professionals can use this to analyze their employers before they set team, or organizational goals and it will help them to work towards appropriate goals or milestones. I like the questions they use for it (Celestine, 2024). 
On a side note, I also like the Signature Strength Questionnaire (SSQ-72) I will post the link if anyone wants to try this one. There are so many, and I like them all that I have seen so far. I do not like the longer ones that have a lot of questions, and I would rather do shorter ones.  But this one is a good one. It can be used for all ages.
