Phase 2. Planning

In this phase, students must use the data they gathered in Phase 1 to inform the development of activities and experiences that are developmentally appropriate and based on the developmental needs of the children observed.  Students will plan activities, lessons, and curriculum/activities that demonstrate a developmentally appropriate knowledge and application of different academic disciplines (NAEYC Standard 5a, 5b).

During the planning process, students must show evidence of:

• • How children/families’ interests, characteristics, needs, and background information are gathered.
  • How gathered information has been interpreted in order to plan developmentally appropriate educational experiences for children and families

 

1. Students will create a Concept Web, based on an area of interest identified in Phase 1. The area of interest can be based on one child (a child who the student has identified as needing support in becoming engaged), or an area of interest noted in multiple children.

1. Students will brainstorm activities related to the concept on the Concept Web and designed to meet the goals identified for children in Phase 1 (2 per area, for multiple curriculum areas) (NAEYC 5a, 5b).

Activities should be developmentally appropriate, and should reflect what students have learned in early childhood lab courses.  At least 1 activity must be literacy based and 1 must be art based.  For example, 3 of the following activities must be used.

• 3-D art
• Collage
• Graphing
• Flannel or Magnetic Boards
• Picture Files

• Puppets
• Story Stretchers
• Prop Boxes

3. Students will plan additions to the environment, based on the concept they selected. These additions are separate from planned activities. They include things such as books added to the library, items added to the block center, changes to dramatic play, etc. (NAEYC Standard 5c).

Students will develop 5 experience plans from the activities on the activity chart. Activities should address goals identified on the Observation Summaries in Phase 1. (NAEYC Standard 5c).
