Having an active lifestyle is the healthiest lifestyle to live especially in adults. As we age, it gets harder for us to exercise and keep healthy. It’s very understandable that some of us have such a busy schedule, health issues, not having enough leisure time or just completely lazy, but we must think of our future health. The best thing for health is good nutrition and exercise. Successful examples of encouraging people to be physically active include promoting exercise and community events through mass media campaigns and decision prompts to help inspire people, like using the stairs instead of an elevator. Walking clubs and buddy systems are also valuable social support networks. Free exercise classes in public areas, like parks, are very important because they target populations who are less likely to manage the suggested amount of exercise, including older adults, women, and those on lower incomes (MediLexicon,2013).
Starting off with a light to moderate exercise and learning about making healthy eating choices can make such a huge difference in health and fitness. To promote exercising in adults might be a little challenging but it is possible. Although gyms aren’t for everybody, there are so many other ways to include physical activity in your agenda. For example, making a goal by the end of the day to accomplish walking 10,000 steps or close to it. Or challenge yourself to drink half a gallon by the end of the day and walk at least thirty minutes a day with family or friends. Attending yoga courses with your best pals and having a smoothie after is even fun. Creating environments suitable for walking and biking, like bike lanes, can be very beneficial. If people improve their access to sports and other outdoor activities, help shape policies for neighborhood design, increase the amount of green in their yard, and/or improve public transportation, they will see an improvement in their physical activity levels (MediLexicon,2013). Promoting healthy habits is key to helping adults to be more active. It’s like once you see and feel a difference, you want to see more. It then becomes an addiction, it becomes motivation. Having someone that motivates you to get up and at least walk will have you eventually motivated to walk on your own after seeing the benefits. Patients can help themselves to be more active by building social networks. Social support interventions focus on changing physical activity behavior through building, strengthening, and maintaining social networks that provide supportive relationships for behavior change. These include setting up buddy systems with friends and families to hold each other accountable for meeting weekly physical activity goals (TusoP,2015).
