Pew Research’s 2014 study “Political Polarization & Media Habits” shows

Pew Research’s 2014 study “Political Polarization & Media Habits” shows that
there are very few news sources that liberals, moderates, and conservatives all trust.
(The Wall Street Journal was the only source trusted by all groups.) Similarly, there are
few news outlets that all ideological groups distrust equally. (The exception: no group
fully trusted BuzzFeed.) These results imply that not only do different groups find their
news in different places but also that those sources produce news in distinctly different
ways. Since there is so little agreement about what can be trusted, how should
American citizens choose their news sources? What makes a news source credible?
And how does the content produced by different news sources differ even when they
are reporting on the same story? In this rhetorical analysis, you will analyze and
evaluate the ways two different news sources report on the same event or story.
Stated differently, this essay will explore, compare, and evaluate the strategies
two different news outlets (probably websites) use to report the same news. In doing so,
you will analyze the rhetorical choices authors, editors, and content designers make
when presenting their stories to the public. You must choose two of the thirty-six news
outlets listed on Pew Research’s chart “Trust Levels of News Sources by Ideological
Group.” Try to find articles that approach a story from distinct perspectives and use
significantly different headlines or presentation strategies. Your articles should both be
Last Name 2
published on roughly the same day (if not, then at least during the same week). In
addition, analyze the platform (newspaper, website, news app, etc.) and visual
presentation (layout, colors, navigation, ads, etc.) as part of your rhetorical analysis.
Ultimately, think about how readers would react to the content and the way that content
is presented. Your introduction should include a dynamic example that presents the
overall story or event to your reader. The introduction should also end with a strong
evaluative thesis that suggests (but does not explain in detail) which news source
utilizes better rhetorical strategies overall. From there, your body paragraphs should
briefly summarize the news story that each article addresses, analyze the two headlines
and any other sub-headlines, discuss the effectiveness of the platform and visuals
presentation, and finally, evaluate the written content of the article itself. Your
conclusion should also include an example, quotation, or experience that succinctly
ends your essay without merely summarizing what you have already said.
This paper should be at least 4 full pages but not more than 5 pages (1200-1500
words). Use MLA format: double-spaced, using a version of the Times or Arial fonts (size
12), with one-inch margins. Your paper will earn a penalty if you do not use proper MLA
formatting. (As an example, this prompt is formatted using MLA format.) Your paper will
also include a Works Cited page with citations for all the articles you cite.
