please reply to this post Stephanie Explain what Labor Force Participation is and how it can be influenced The text describes labor force participation as the percentage of individuals who have legitimate employment or who are actively looking for employment (Markson, Stein, & Alden, 2016). There are a number of factors that influence this percentage, and certain groups may share similar life events that impact their ability to work. For example, the percentage of older people in the work force is lower than other age groups because as age increases, people begin retirement. One in three people aged 55 to 59 are not actively in the work force, and this number drops to one out of two people in the age range of 60-46 (Markson, Stein, & Alden, 2016). Women’s numbers in the workforce are lower than those for men. One influential factor is motherhood. Many women take time off, or leave, the workforce when they children. Gender also influence the labor force. For example, people who are white tend to the the highest earning group, and white males tend to continue in the workforce later in life than other groups. The type of jobs a person has will also influence their time in the labor force. People who work in fields that require manual labor often do not continue working as long as those in fields that do not require the same amount of physical labor. Health plays a large role in the age at which people within these fields leave the labor force. Injuries and aging are two concerns that can prevent a person from working. In contrast, individuals who work in corporate or “blue collar” positions are often healthier and able to continue employment later in life. Higher pay, access to resources and medical care, and a less tolling work environment are factors that contribute to this difference. The amount of time spent actively in the labor force increased across race and gender in those with higher educational attainment (Markson, Stein, & Alden, 2016). Present at least three reasons why an older worker may want to delay retirement. Everyone’s situation is different, and there are number of factors that can influence a person’s decisions pertaining to retirement. One of the major factors that much be considered is money. An older person may choose to delay retirement because they are not financially prepared. They may be the main, or only, source of income within the household. Many employers do not offer retirement packages, and it can make it difficult for a person to lose the income. Health is another prominent factor in the decision to retire. People who are in better health tend to stay in the labor force longer. For some, working is a way to stay active, which is known to reduce risk factors for several health issues later in life (Markson, Stein, & Alden, 2016). Explain how society benefits when older workers delay retirement. While there are a number of benefits of delayed retirement to older workers, there are ways in which older workers benefit from society as well. Many older workers have accumulated a wealth of knowledge that can be passed to the next generation of workers. This helps younger workers become better at their jobs, and it also helps their employers by having better trained and educated employees. That is one reason why some older workers make strong leaders or venture into consulting and coaching later in life. In the context of delaying retirement and transitioning to retirement in a different way, what are the flexible work options that may be available to older workers? The number of options available to older people have increased seeking to delay or transition into retirement has increased. Since older workers often have flexible schedules and do require benefits, many employers see them as an advantageous. Some companies offer “flexible employment” arrangements, such as independent contractors, temporary workers, and on-call personnel, to accommodate older workers who are not able to work the traditional “9-5” role. Flexible schedules and other accommodations make this type of arrangement beneficial to those who would like an alternative to full retirement (Markson, Stein, & Alden, 2016). According to the video, how does the hiring of older workers benefit the employer, Vitaneedle? According to the video, how do the older workers benefit from their employment at Vitaneedle? At Vitaneedle, older employees and their employers share a mutually beneficial relationship. Employers benefit from older workers because of their work ethic and experience. This employer values their attention to detail and loyalty. Older workers are often trained in multiple areas and are more cost efficient to the company. The employees themselves also benefit from this set-up. For many older employees, work is a great way to stay active. They also enjoy flexible schedules and job security (PBS NewsHour, 2013). According to the video, when older workers need to stay in employment and are successful in doing so, what affect can that have on young workers at career entry points? The changing geography in the labor marker has had an impact on the dynamic of the labor force, and what positions are being held by whom. Many jobs that were once largely performed by teens are being filled by older people. Because of flexibility schedules and the low cost of employment, companies often view older workers as strong contenders for these roles. Changes such as these in the labor force are causing college graduates to fill the roles once occupied by high school graduates. High school graduates occupy the roles of drop-outs and teens, and this leaves teenagers without a jobs that can help prepare them for future roles (PBS NewsHour, 2013). How can employers and the Government support older worker employment and also ensure their initiatives aren’t detrimental to younger worker employment? What social policy options are there to ensure both vulnerable groups “win”? Government policy that regulates discrimination against certain protected groups already exists. Child labor laws protect young workers from being in unsafe work environment and working certain hours. Older workers are protected against ageism by legislation as well. However, to help ensure that opportunities continue for both of these groups, the community must work together. Employers can work closely within their communities, with school, and other outreach programs to offer program targeted at younger workers. This could include apprenticeships, training courses, and certification programs that allow young workers to enter the labor force and find gainful employment easier. This would prevent positions for older workers from being eliminated and help create new opportunities for young workers. References: Markson, E. W., Stein, P. J., & Alden, E. L. (2016).
