In your response to one of your classmates, use these two questions to discuss the material presented:
How does a field study work with the interview approaches or techniques your classmate posed?
Why might we use a field study with interview questions?
Marcia’s post
This week, we are quite focused on the approaches to interviewing. As you develop your initial response, please address the following three questions:
What types of interviewing approaches or techniques exist?
An interview is an essential part of a case study design. The goal of interviews is to acquire complete and accurate rich data to gain leads and evidence that can answer the researcher’s question (Vrij et al., 2014). Therefore, developing rapport is a critical part of an interview. If good rapport develops, it could elicit truthful, high-quality data, and improve the memory retrieval of the participants.
Psychological and cognitive are two interview approaches that could improve data collection from interviewees. Elements of psychological interviewing that may increase rapport are:
Mutual attention – the degree of involvement between both the interviewer and interviewee.
Positivity – the warmth and competence of the interviewer.
Coordination – synchronize verbal and nonverbal behaviors of the interviewee to make participants feel comfortable (Vrij et al., 2014).
A cognitive interview (CI) is an approach used to obtain insight and perceptions of interviewees by encouraging them to express their true thoughts and feelings. Three elements of cognitive interviewing are:
Rapport – prompting the interviewee to recall a familiar event with a good memory may allow participants to open up.
Support – encourage the interviewee to divulge additional information with appreciative prompts.
Lie detection – due to the prevalent use of cognitive interviewing by law enforcement, there is a need to improve truthful recounts of an event. The interviewer may add follow-up questions to gain the truth because lying exhausts cognitive resources.
Which interview approaches or techniques appeal to you as a researcher?
A psychological interview may be the best choice to understand nuanced perspectives of the psychological experience. My case study aims to capture the realist perspective by understanding how past events of childhood security influence current behaviors toward food. Interviewing participants for childhood events requires a high degree of memory recall. According to Köhnken et al. (1999), cognitive recall could produce recall errors compared to other interview approaches. CI is typically used in police interrogations or child witnesses and is underutilized in health- fields. Due to hypermnesia during the first CI interview, participants may have to be interviewed several times to elicit accurate memories (Köhnken et al., 1999). Additional time requirements may be taxing for participants. A psychological interview’s elements, including mutual attention, positivity, and coordination, would blend seamlessly with Appreciative Inquiry to engineer social dynamics. Creating a social dynamic between participant and interviewer could increase rapport and corporation, potentially leading to thick and rich data necessary for case study research.
3. How will you set up a protocol for the approach or technique you selected?
The psychological interview protocol is as follows:
Show appreciation to the participant for their time.
Ask ‘what was the best thing that happened to them this week.’ A favorable start could improve the memory retrieval of the participant.
Turner (2010) suggested that an informal interview could also increase rapport.
Ask interview questions that are neutral and unbiased to create trust and improve rapport (Turner, 2010; Moore, 2015).
Listen attentively, occasionally interjecting with short verbal responses or non-verbal cues. Understanding the interviewees’ thoughts and perceptions is the key to good interviewing, and conversational interviewing could introduce reflexivity into the interview (Yin, 2012).
Thank the participant for their time.
