Gene Editing: Should You be Worried? (Link to Video https://youtu.be/F7DpdOHRDR4)
From combating climate change to curing disease to creating designer babies, gene-editing technologies have the potential to transform lives. What risks do they pose?Thoughtfully reflect on the issues discussed in the talks you have viewed. Address the following points in your essay:
1) What is the speaker’s point of view about the topic? Is the speaker biased?2) What ethical issues and ethical reasoning are argued?3) Do you think that the issues discussed have moral and ethical implications? Why or why not?4) Do you agree with the speaker’s point of view? Be specific and thorough. Express how and why you agree or disagree and discuss how ethics and values contribute to your opinion.5) Consider the theoretical concepts discussed in the course. Do not just state your viewpoint, rather provide relevant details to support your findings and/or position.
In the video, “Should You be Worried About Gene Editing?”, Natalie Kofler, founder of Editing Nature and a speaker for TEDxVienna 2018, presents her point of view on gene editing. She argues that while gene-editing technologies have great potential to transform lives in positive ways, they also pose risks that we must consider and address if we are to successfully utilize these technologies in responsible ways. Kofler discusses several ethical issues related to gene-editing technology such as consent and the right of individuals to make decisions about their own bodies and health; ownership rights over genetic information; privacy concerns surrounding what happens when this data is shared with third parties; safety issues concerning unintended consequences from manipulating genes; implications on social inequality when certain populations are targeted or excluded from access to treatments; risks from potentially creating designer babies or genetically enhanced humans. Kofler claims it is necessary for us as a society to discuss these issues so that any regulations put into place would be based upon sound ethical reasoning. The implications discussed by Kofler in her presentation do have moral and ethical implications because they involve questions around autonomy (the freedom of an individual), justice (fairness) and beneficence (doing good). For example, she raises a question about who should get priority access when medical resources are scarce – those at the highest risk for disease or those who can afford it? This involves both moral principles regarding justice (e.g., fairness) and beneficence (e.g., doing good). Therefore one needs to consider how best ensure fair access while taking care not create further inequity among already vulnerable populations. I agree with Kofler’s point of view because she draws attention to numerous important considerations related to gene-editing technology before it becomes widely used in real life applications. By noting the various ethical concerns associated with such powerful technology – including addressing human autonomy through informed consent policies , protecting individual privacy through regulatory oversight measures , safeguarding public safety through premarketing testing protocols , ensuring equitable treatment amongst all populations – people can begin having meaningful conversations about how best regulate this field so that it does not compromise ethics values in pursuit of its technological goals . Additionally, I believe such thoughtful discourse is necessary as part our efforts creating an equitable society where everyone has equal rights under law regardless their ability pay .>
