Playing God: Should Anyone be Allowed to Edit Their DNA Using – CRISPR Technology? (https://youtu.be/yAud1iynheY)
CRISPR technology is making genetic editing available to more people than ever before. But how wide should that door be openedThoughtfully reflect on the issues discussed in the talks you have viewed. Address the following points in your essay:
1) What is the speaker’s point of view about the topic? Is the speaker biased?2) What ethical issues and ethical reasoning are argued?3) Do you think that the issues discussed have moral and ethical implications? Why or why not?4) Do you agree with the speaker’s point of view? Be specific and thorough. Express how and why you agree or disagree and discuss how ethics and values contribute to your opinion.5) Consider the theoretical concepts discussed in the course. Do not just state your viewpoint, rather provide relevant details to support your findings and/or position.

The speaker in this video, Dr. David Kestenbaum, is a bioethicist who discusses the implications and ethical concerns regarding CRISPR technology. He argues that while this technology has the potential to do great good, it also raises questions of justice and equity—namely, who will have access to CRISPR-driven treatments? The ethical implication here being that those with more money or better access to resources would be able to purchase these treatments while others may not have the same opportunity. Additionally, any mistakes made during genetic editing could potentially irreversibly affect future generations. Therefore, it’s necessary to consider how decisions made today can impact future people who haven’t even been born yet. I agree with Dr. Kestenbaum’s point of view about the topic for two reasons in particular: firstly, because I believe it is important to take into account potential risks when utilizing such powerful technologies; and secondly because I think ethics should play a large role in deciding whether anyone (not just wealthy individuals) should be allowed to edit their DNA using CRISPR technology or not. From an ethical standpoint, one must weigh the potential benefits of utilizing such advanced technologies against its possible consequences before allowing everyone unrestricted access—especially given that some of these consequences are irreversible and cannot be undone once they occur. Thus far, much research has gone into understanding how CRISPR works but there’s still much left to learn before unleashing this power on society as a whole. The course covered many different theories including utilitarianism which states that actions are right if they tend to promote happiness for the largest number of people affected by it; deontology which emphasizes moral obligations; virtue ethics which focuses on developing character traits rather than following rules; natural law theory which looks at universal values found among all societies across time; relativism which holds that different cultures value different principles; feminist ethics which considers social justice issues pertaining especially towards women and minorities; environmental/green ethics focusing on sustainability practices; contractarianism where autonomous actors negotiate mutually beneficial agreements without coercion or deception; animal rights advocating for non-human animals’ intrinsic worthiness separate from human interests and consequentialism where only consequences count when evaluating whether an action was ethically correct or wrong. In light of all these theories discussed throughout this course I believe it would be morally irresponsible not only allow anyone unrestricted access but also ignore possible long-term impacts if we don’t approach this issue thoughtfully with regard for both individual wellbeing as well as collective benefit—this involves taking into account broader social implications like potential disparities between those who can afford expensive treatments versus those who may struggle obtaining them due lack of financial resources or other limitations such as geographic location relative healthcare accessibility etcetera. Ultimately It’s important for us today understand our collective responsibility towards ensuring equitable distribution approaches so that everyone regardless of background has equal opportunities benefiting from new innovations like gene editing tools offered through CRISPR technology .>
