PROJECT: Write a scene focused on a difficult conversation. As Ayad Akhtar took inspiration from his life and a dinner party he attended, you too can use your own experiences and imagination to create a scene that includes a difficult conversation. The environment you create should occur at a meal or celebration of some kind. ( dinner partytea- baby shower- etc- let your imagination come into play here)
PREPARATION: Create a small planet- a world for your scene. Start with the given circumstances of the scene: \u25cf Who \u2013 The characters involved \u25cf What \u2013 the action of the scene \u25cf Where \u2013 the environment or world of the play \u25cf When \u2013 the time the action takes place- not just the year, but the season, the time of dayall of these details can affect the scene. \u25cf Why \u2013 the intention of the character- and the intention of the artist.
Using the plays we have read thus far as inspiration for form- you can use stage directions to paint your scene, also add characters names so we know who is speaking. If you have questions about form please look to the plays we have read for some inspiration for your structure and lay out on the page. Your scene should be 3-4 pages and include a Beginning- middle and end. The style in which you write is unique to your voice and the characters you create. You may also draw inspiration from some of the journal writing we have done in class.
After that:
Write a self assessment for yourself about the project , Unconventional rubrics are encouraged, how can you check in with your own effort, inspiration and creative risk with each new writing project? How can you design and integrate your own assessment and take ownership of your own growth?
Things to think about when creating your rubric; are you experimenting with a new form, using your authentic voice, being vulnerable, synthesizing the themes from the plays in your work?
