In order to illustrate challengesassociated with health emergency preparedness, this assignment will explore the case of EVDin Sierra Leone, assess the response within the nation, compare the response against other theresponse for other health emergencies, and make recommendations of ways that EVDpreparedness and recovery should be improved.BackgroundSierra Leon is a low-income nation in West Africa. Based on recent statistics, thenation has a population of seven million, a GDP of $13.13 billion, and a GDP per capita of$1,698 (International Monetary Fund, 2019). The country borders Guinea and Liberia. Likemost other nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, Guinea faces several socioeconomic challengessuch as high levels of poverty, low levels of educational attainment, the poor state of health,high levels of inequality, human rights issues, and occasional political instabilities (Collier &Duponchel, 2013). While diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and cholera, among others,have been endemic to Sierra Leone, the nation has been facing even greater challenges as it iscommonly hit by some of the most dangerous diseases such as Ebola virus disease.2GROUP COLLABORATIVE PROJECT CASE STUDY ASSIGNMENTEVD is one of the most dangerous diseases in the world. It is identified as a viralhemorrhagic disease that often affects humans and primates (Kourtis, Appelgren, Chevalier &McElroy, 2015). While the virus is commonly found in some fruit bats, it has no effect onthese animals. As explained by Kadanali and Karagoz (2015), contact with or consumption ofanimals from infected primates or carrier fruit bats will lead to an infection. EVD is a highlycontagious disease that spreads across humans through contact with any fluids of an infectedperson. Surprisingly, some fluids such as semen from people who are undergoing recoverymay contain the virus months after these people recuperate. Ebola virus has a very lowincubation period. As reported by Kourtis et al. (2015), it takes between two and twenty daysfor the disease to manifest once the virus enters a healthy person. Common symptoms includefever, headaches, general body weakness, muscular pain, sore throat, rashes, diarrhea,vomiting, and internal and external bleeding. Additionally, physiological processes, andparticularly those of the liver and the kidney, reduce considerably. It takes approximately oneto two weeks for the infected person to die. Unfortunately, EVD has no certain cure, whichmakes quarantine the most effective solution.In August 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the EVD outbreak inSierra Leone a global health emergency.
