Gender Equality entails that men and women have equal rights, and access to resources in different spheres of their lives. It also entails that the state and social institutions view them as equal subjects, and where applicable as equal citizens.
In South Asia, though strides have been made, there are several challenges to women\u2019s access to equal opportunities, and rights in the fields of education, economic sector, and workplace. One of these is the debate among religious, and political institutions about women\u2019s identities, and behavior. How do religious, government and socio-cultural institutions aim to control and define gender identities? Do they use the state as a tool to control gender norms? Who supports them? Who defies them, and how? Choosing at least 2 primary texts ( one film, and one text) discuss the role of some of these institutions in defining gender identities, and discuss the ways in which people challenge their narratives. You will need to specifically identify the institutions, and use a range of examples to address these questions.
This essay will be 5 pages long, and will use at least two research essays ( an essay from a scholarly journal). Using a research journal essay will mean that students read the scholarly essay and include at least 4-5 quotes from each work to suggest clear understanding, and use of the material.

Includes proper references to the texts under discussion- name of writer, title, year of publication etc.
Outlines problems clearly, and discusses possible solutions
Provides adequate historical context wherever necessary.
