You will be classifying these organisms based upon their physical characteristics. First you will need to decide if all of the organisms represent individual species. Then you will need to group your species into genera (plural for genus) using the criteria that members of a genus should resemble each other more closely than they resemble members of other genera. Using the same criteria, genera are combined into families, and families into orders. Justify your selections by explaining why certain characteristics were the basis for grouping together while other characteristics were the basis for separate grouping. You may wish to cut out each organism so that you can move them around next to each other to compare physical characteristics.
You can use a chart or any other means of showing your classification scheme.
Part II:
Once you’ve created your classification scheme, download the file Fossil Record Week 6 Discussion.docx. (*Attached) Each organism represents a fossil that has been dated to be a certain number of million years old. These fossils represent ancestors of the living organisms. You are to determine the oldest ancestor for each genus of organisms that you’ve identified that is not an ancestor for any other genus. Justify your selections by explaining why certain characteristics guided you to select one ancestor over another for a specific genus. Many different genera have common ancestors but often due to evolution, there is branching within the family tree so that members of the same genus will have a common ancestor not shared by other genera. It is also recommended that you cut out each organism so that you move them around to be able to compare them to other organisms and so that you can order them by age.
HINTS:
Some living forms are also found in the fossil record.
There are gaps in the fossil record for some lineages.
Some species went extinct without leaving any descendants (remember the dinosaurs).
The organisms were numbered at random; the numbers themselves provide no clues to evolutionary relationships.
Organism #73, dated to 19 million years old, is the common ancestor for all of the fossils and the living organisms; therefore, it cannot be one of the ancestors that you identify as the oldest ancestor for any genus.
________________________________________________________________________

You may find the following videos helpful in understanding this week’s content and in completing this discussion: 1. https://youtu.be/BnDRJAt-4aM 2. https://youtu.be/SA02un37GFQ 3. https://youtu.be/hty7RQq2Q0Q Part I: Download the file Living Organisms Week 6 Discussion.docx (*Attached) There you will find fourteen (14) imaginary organisms.
